Turtle dove hunting trips

The turtle dove is a migratory game bird found around open farmland, crops, small woods and watering spots. Hunting it means following the passage and enjoying a style of hunting built on stands, quick shooting and days in company, very different from walking up with dogs.

On Wildoora you will find turtle dove packages run by local agencies that take care of lodging, stands and transfers: pick a destination and send your enquiry.

How it is hunted

• You hunt from fixed stands near fields, watering points and perches, mostly during the busiest passage hours in the morning and late afternoon.
• Shooting is often quick and plentiful: good reflexes and a gun suited to fast shooting help.
• Bird numbers depend on the passage and the weather: the agency can point to the best periods but cannot guarantee them.
• Many packages include stand, guide and transfers: check the listing for what is included.

When

Turtle dove hunting takes place during passage periods, which vary from country to country. Exact dates depend on the local hunting calendar: each package lists the available periods and the agency confirms the correct ones.

What you need

• A valid hunting licence, insurance and travel documents; for non-EU countries check the current entry requirements.
• In many European countries turtle dove hunting is suspended or restricted: the packages cover countries where it is allowed, but always check the current rules with the agency.
• If you bring your gun you need transport paperwork (including the European Firearms Pass); many agencies rent guns.
