How it is hunted

• You hunt from a blind (hides or stands on the water), often with decoys, around dawn and dusk.
• Terrain is marsh, river, lake and flooded field; a retriever is a precious help and many agencies provide one.
• Migration and weather (frost, wind, rain) change bird numbers a lot from one day to the next.
• In many countries lead shot is banned in wetlands: the agency tells you which ammunition is allowed.

Waterfowl hunting is concentrated in autumn and winter, with the best days tied to cold snaps and migration peaks. Dates change by country and year (seasons are reversed in South America): each package lists the available periods.

What you need

• A valid hunting licence, insurance and travel documents; for non-EU countries check the current entry requirements.
• Warm waterproof clothing, boots or waders; many agencies supply what is needed in the blind.
• If you bring your gun you need transport paperwork (including the European Firearms Pass); ask the agency about rentals too.
